About Lakeland

Lakeland began broadcasting on 30 June 2017.

Located 80Km South West of Cooktown and 308Km South East of Coen, Lakeland covers an area of 4871 square kilometres.

Lakeland has a population of 299 people and was first occupied by the Western Yalanji people.  In 1873, it was established as a farming community to supply the Palmer River Goldfields.  It remains a place for horticulture due to the rich volcanic soils from the surrounding mountains.

The town was named after William Lakeland, one of the most prolific gold prospectors in the Cape York Peninsula
