About Cooktown

The Cooktown station began broadcasting on 13 February 2013.

Located approximately 330Km North of Cairns by road and 530Km due East from Kowanyama, Cooktown has a population of 2631.

The Cooktown area covers the northern boundary of the traditional lands of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people, including the Yuku Baja-Muliku, Kuku Bididji and Kuku Nyungkul clans. It also covers the southern boundary of the Gungarde and Guugu Yimithirr Aboriginal people, including the Waymbuurr and Gamay clans.

Cooktown was founded in 1874 during the Palmer River gold rush and by 1876 it had a population of 30,000 and was declared a municipality.  After 1885, the gold production dropped and so did the population.

The Cooktown airport was built in 1942 to support World War II military operations.

James Cook Museum in Cooktown tells the story of Captain James Cook's landing from the perspective of the traditional land owners and also displays a lot of Indigenous artefacts, tools and artworks.
