Located in the centre of the Cape York Peninsula - 280Km NorthWest of Cooktown and 171Km SouthEast of Aurukun.

Coen has a population of 364 and is the traditional lands of the Ayapathu, Kaanju, Lama Lama, Umpila and Wik-Mungkan peoples.  Languages spoken include English, Ayapathu, Kaanju, Lama Lama, Umpila and Wik-Mungkan.

In 1876 gold was discovered on the Coen River and a small fort was built by gold miners.  The settlement remained fairly small until 1893 when there was an influx of miners and more established town was formed.  The mining began to decline in the 1930s but Coen remained an important centre for the remote Cape York communities as it is today.
